CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

At Namaste Highland Park, each class is an authentic offering of our unique and talented instructors. Our yoga classes are personal, not company scripted, we honor the wisdom of our teachers and encourage them to teach classes they believe in.
Our naming convention for classes honors the common heritage of all yoga styles and provides an easy way for our students to find classes that fit their existing practice or help them begin a new one.

Stick around after class! We offer tea after class as a gesture of hospitality and an opportunity to slow down, connect and honor each other.

HATHA YOGA

HATHA is a potent alignment-oriented practice that emphasizes alignment and breath while entering, holding, and leaving the posture. It uses postures (asanas) and stretches in combination with the breath while holding the poses to develop flexibility and relaxation.
--> All HATHA classes encourage proper alignment of the body, often include breathing and meditation techniques to bring balance, strength, and calmness to the practitioner. 

Hatha yoga is excellent  for students who appreciate longer holds in individual postures and prefer a slower and more meditative approach to practice (while still reaping the benefits of a physical practice).
HATHA CLASSES

HATHA :: Basics
This class focuses on core asanas/postures and the foundations of breath-work.
Learn proper alignment, where to focus effort and where to find release.   
**Good choice for beginners, great for all levels. A strong yoga practice begins with a sturdy foundation, this class can fine tune even an advanced practice.

A steady practice with focus on proper alignment and holding of poses to engage,  building strength, stamina, flexibility and balance as well as improving concentration and breath control. 
**Introducing twists, some backbends, approachable inversions and the usage of props (blocks, straps), this class is suitable for, and potentially challenging for ALL LEVELS as it can be taken as easily or deeply as one's body demands on a given day. 

HATHA :: Intermediate
In this steady-paced yoga class traditional asanas are held in accurate alignment with emphasis on building core strength, stamina, flexibility and balance as well as improving concentration and breath control. 
**Focused on refinement of the basics, the practice of Sun Salutations and introduction to revolved standing poses, hand balances, inversions and backbends. Using props when necessary, we move at a faster pace than in an All Levels class.

HATHA :: Alignment School
This workshop style class is dedicated to deepening body awareness, functional strength for an all around stronger yoga practice.
Limited to 12 people, students get one-on-one direction, personalized modifications, and lots of prop work. Whether you're new to yoga and looking to prevent injury, or you're a veteran seeking more detailed instruction, this is the class for you.
EXPECT a challenging, non-judgmental, and playful environment - all in the service of growing a practice that works best for you and your own body.

HATHA :: Candlelight 
Wind down your day by candlelight. This well-rounded evening class infuses a steady, all levels hatha class with quiet, cooling, relaxing and restorative poses at the end and an extended savasana. Perfect to ease away the day and prepare you for a restful night's sleep. 
VINYASA YOGA

VINYASA is a flowing, dynamic yoga practice that cultivates presence by connecting movement with breath. Most classes feature several elements of traditional Ashtanga yoga— vigorous sun salutations, standing poses, preparation for arm balances & backbends, with focus on gaze point guided by a steady breath.
--> All VINYASA classes require focus and move at a quicker pace; therefore, some Yoga experience is helpful prior to starting this class.

Vinyasa is excellent for students who find that sweating and movement helps create a state of physical exertion and mental concentration leading to deep relaxation and steadiness after class.
VINYASA CLASSES

VINYASA :: All Levels

Integrating movement and breath, this class is aimed at the seasoned beginners and regular practitioners.
- Introducing twists, some backbends, approachable inversions, be prepared to explore both beginning and intermediate poses. Modifications are given allowing the students to choose a more beginning or more advanced practice according to their needs. 

Linking breath to movement, this class offers a faster pace practice, explores more complex movements and sequences including twists, backbends; options for inversions and arm balances layered over solid foundations. The teacher will encourage rest periods and offer modifications as needed.

This vigorously paced class offers dynamic transitions through poses and the opportunity to explore inversions, arm balances and backbends, building more strength, balance, and flexibility. 
The class has more rigorous/athletic sequencing and is geared toward experienced practitioners (willing to modify their practice from one day to the next according to what their body tells them is intelligent and safe).

WORKOUT CLASSES

Not for the weak at heart! Fast paced, high energy, open to all levels . . . Come do what you can do . . . you’ll get stronger each week.

STRONG :: Yoga for Strength 
STRONG :: Express (45min) 
Strength emanates from the core outwards. Build heat, stamina and strengthen your core muscles so you can flow with grace and ease in your yoga practice. Be prepared to generate heat with longer holds, to work and sweat in this power session.
EXPECT a great cardiovascular and strength building workout combined with breath work.

GENTLE & COMBINED CLASSES

Our YOGA and GENTLE classes are ideal for those that like their yoga with a side of relaxation. Accessible to all levels, experienced yogis who are looking to slow down or those newer to yoga or working with special concerns or injuries.

YOGA :: Yoga & Meditation (c) (c)$10
This gentle flow class is focused on the experience of being in your body and with your breath. Accessible to all levels, including beginners, this class is a combination of gentle & dynamic flow coupled with longer holds to help find alignment in our bodies, within ourselves, connect with clarity, humility, and love.
We begin end class with Mindfulness Meditation – a subtle but very special practice that is often overlooked.

YOGA :: Healthy Backs (c) (c)=$10
This class is designed to specifically support and care for the back in a safe and fun sequence of poses. We will focus on relieving muscle tension, increasing flexibility and strengthening all our supporting muscles. Relaxation techniques will be used to help reduce stress and chronic pain.

GENTLE :: Yin Restore
Work the connective tissues of our ligaments, joints and deep fascial networks in this meditative practice focused on deep stretching, breathing and relaxation. Props are used to support the body as postures are held for an extended time allowing for deep stretches that are soft, rather than muscle driven. 
Yin Yoga is the perfect complement to a regular practice of active asana.

GENTLE :: Yin + Nidra
Work the connective tissues of our ligaments, joints and deep fascial networks in this meditative practice focused on deep stretching, breathing and relaxation. Props are used to support the body as postures are held for an extended time allowing for deep stretches that are soft, rather than muscle driven.
Class ends with a guided Yoga Nidra savasana "yogic sleep" - a conscious state between wakefulness and sleep. The teacher's voice leads the shifting of your attention in a practice of letting go, willful emptying that leads to calmness, quietness and clarity.

GENTLE :: Flow & Restore
Long day? Unwind with gentle flowing movements & passive, supported restorative poses to nourish the body and calm the mind. Props support the body to help release tension and encourage the body's own healing power. We end each class with a guided Yoga Nidra savasana "yogic sleep" - a conscious state between wakefulness and sleep. The teacher's voice leads the shifting of your attention in a practice of letting go, willful emptying that leads to calmness, quietness and clarity.
